It takes its name from the River Sa\u00f4ne, which crosses it from north to south. It&#8217;s a big river as well, 473 km long and the third longest in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Plancher-les-Mines is sited in the high Rahin valley and, as its name suggests, the town has a long history of industry and mining, now in a steep decline, that has marked the area&#8217;s valleys.
