Guide to using the GPX files

Rédigé par Enrico Alberini

Files in GPX format (GPs eXchange) are available for download for the routes organised by the Club des Cent Cols. The GPX format being by definition non-proprietary and not associated with any type of software or GPS receiver, you will have to use the documentation of your devices or software to use these files.

Please note: some software (such as Base Camp) can permanently store points such as passes in the form of waypoints. If you use specific symbols for the passes (for example to distinguish those already passed from those still to be done), then you risk replacing these symbols when you import a track or a route containing the passes of the same name. To avoid this, it may be useful to import only the track without the waypoints

Two types of GPX files are provided and their use depends on the capacity and functions of your GPS receiver. Some older devices can store multiple tracks, but each track must contain a maximum of about 500 points. Newer devices can manage plots with a higher number of points. So you have ZIP files that contain either GPX with all available points, or GPX limited to 500 points. Just choose the type that suits your needs. For use on a computer with mapping software, it is not necessary to limit yourself to 500 points.

For the most recent routes, multiple files are now also available. With this option, the main route corresponds to a file and the options (back and forth, additional loops) are all separate files. This allows, once loaded on a GPS, to distinguish these different parts thanks to different colors. To use this version in several files per run, just choose ” GPX multiple “.

GPX files are available in compressed form as a ZIP file. After downloading, you have to extract the GPX from their ZIP. Computers with recent operating systems are capable of directly opening a ZIP file as if it were a folder from which the contained files can be extracted. Otherwise, it is still possible to use compression and decompression software, such as 7ZIP (free).
