Presentation of the region
Situated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Vaison-la-Romaine is above all known for the archaeological heritage to which it owes its name.

Vaison-la-Romaine, listed as one of the “Plus Beaux Détours de France”, is marked by a rich history dating back to antiquity. Witness to its glorious history, the town holds the largest archaeological park in France with its two sites antiques : Puymin and Villasse. Visiting the hearts of these two sites, both carefully preserved, offers a fascinating glimpse of Roman life. At the centre of the Puymin site are the Roman theatre, a remarkable architectural treasure, and the Théo Desplans Museum where statues and everyday objects stand witness to 2000 years of history…
The Roman bridge with its majestic arches, crosses the River Ouvèze, allowing us to pass from Roman times to the mediaeval era against a backdrop of Mont Ventoux.
Listed as a ‘Petite Cité de Caractère’, the mediaeval city invites you to stroll along its narrow, paved streets where the Market square and its murmuring fountain make for an enchanting ambience. The castle, highest point of the city and clinging to its rocky site, watches serenely over the town. Shops and art galleries add to the attractions of the High Town.
Vaison-la-Romaine owns the distinction of having two cathedral churches : the cathedral church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption in the heart of the mediaeval city with its sumptious stained glass, created by Kim En-joong, and the cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, situated in the background of the ancient site of Villasse, with a magnificent cloister for moments of quietude and contemplation facing so much historic beauty.
