On Friday 11 August, 100 French and German Cols met up on the Rhine island at Vogelgrun for a tour of the Kaiserstuhl, including 3 passes. Several dozen of them discovered this volcanic landscape, despite a heavy thunderstorm in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

The arrivals followed one another at the Mittelwihr Centre where 80 people, welcomed by Ren\u00e9 and Nicole Poty, were accommodated on a full-board basis for 4 days. Each participant received a copy of the \u00abAu pays des Ballons\u00bb brochure, prepared by Thierry Adam, whose presentation and documentary research are to be commended. The road and mountain bike routes are skilfully described, and the passes are listed and plotted on a colour map extract. 150 copies were produced with the financial support of the Conseil G\u00e9n\u00e9ral and the Association D\u00e9partementale du Tourisme du Haut-Rhin. They are sure to sell like hotcakes, as many of the participants are staying in motorhomes, bed and breakfasts or at nearby campsites, bringing the total number of participants to 150.<\/p>\n

At 6 p.m. a welcome was given by our President in the presence of Jean-Claude Gailer, President of the Codep FFCT du Haut-Rhin. Thierry Adam gave a verbal presentation of the programme for the next 4 days, before everyone enjoyed a drink, which was duly served in a small balloon.<\/p>\n

On Saturday 12 August, the gloomy weather did not discourage the cyclists from setting off for the Vosges forests, towards the Val de Vill\u00e9 and the Champ du Feu, returning via the Val d'Argent and the Alsatian vineyards. Despite isolated showers, the day was not as bad as the weather forecast had predicted. The evening ended with a visit to the Ziegler cellars in Mittelwihr, and some of the group had the opportunity to meet a young couple of teachers from the Nantes region who were completing a 10-month round-the-world cycling trip.<\/p>\n

The Mittelwihr centre has provided us with a room where Nicole Poty can set up and present the Cent Cols clothing collection, while Ren\u00e9 dispatches the usual documentation: magazines, TOPO, Chauvot and various collar catalogues. From 5 p.m. until lunchtime, the room was packed to the rafters, and who knows why, long clothes and mackintoshes were in great demand!<\/p>\n

After lunch, Ludger Vorberg presented 3 road and 3 mountain bike routes in the Black Forest, starting in Freiburg, Staufen and Gutach, and gave a few pointers to the meeting points for departures and picnics.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Sunday the 13th was a rainy day in both Mittelwihr and Fribourg, with cloudy skies offering little hope of an improvement. Nevertheless, around fifty cyclists met up at the Wiehre auxiliary station, from where a group of 30 mountain bikers headed for the Feldberg under the guidance of Thomas Vorberg, another mountain bike group led by Thierry Adam headed for the Schauinsland and 8 road cyclists set off for the passes overlooking the Dreisam valley. The picnic has wisely been moved to the Kirchzarten cemetery, where the Vorberg family is offering a brioche braid bearing the CCC 2006 logo for the hikers to enjoy.<\/p>\n

The evening of the 13th is reserved for an Alsatian folk group, who enliven the meal by having the guests take part in typical dances, and show them the details and significance of the dancers' headdresses and costumes. The patronage of the Conseil G\u00e9n\u00e9ral du Haut-Rhin enabled the Club des Cent Cols to organise this evening and to offer each guest a bottle of \"Mandelberg\", a Riesling grand cru, characteristic of this part of the Alsace vineyards.<\/p>\n

The weather on 14 August is looking brighter, with blue skies to be seen. It's the day of the Ballons, starting with an approach via the Route du Vin, before heading for the Route des Cr\u00eates, or the Vall\u00e9e de Munster for the intermediate circuits. Alas, wind, cloud and rain will be the order of the day for the Cent Cols on the crests, which will be hard to enjoy. Those brave enough to complete the circuits on offer will finish very late at the Centre de Mittelwihr, especially as the abrasive nature of the terrain will have worn out their brake pads to the point that some will have to walk down some sections.<\/p>\n

This final evening of the trip is devoted to the Cent Cols \u00abQuiz\u00bb, prepared and hosted by Didier R\u00e9mond, which skilfully combines 25 questions asking questions about the passes in general, the Club des Cent Cols and the cinema! The winners will receive a bottle of Mandelberg wine or a map of the Haut-Rhin with cycle routes. To round off the evening, a tasting of a ros\u00e9 wine made from Muscat de Hambourg, owned by Georges Golse, and vinified by Philippe Baudon, both Cent Cols.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the trip is the tour of the Welche region and the concentration at the Col des Bagenelles. After vacating the rooms at the Mittelwihr Centre, everyone sets off on one of the loops of the route, with the aim of arriving at Les Bagenelles before midday. Belenos, God of the sun, is finally with the Cent Cols and the day will be beautiful, much to the relief of the organisers, who can offer a tasting of Munster and Gew\u00fcrtztraminer to the participants, who also have the surprise of receiving a water bottle in the colours of the Club des Cent Cols when they sign the Visitors' Book of the Concentration. Many thanks to the many people who helped the organisers, who transported and set up the equipment, who cut the bread and cheese and who served the wine. Thanks also to the Cyclos Belges d'Enghien for the beer tasting!<\/p>\n

Nearly 200 participants will be clocking in at the pass: some from M\u00fcnich, Turin and Ajaccio, the Pyrenees organisers of the 2005 Concentration are out in force, and among the nationalities present are a Canadian, Dutch, Belgians, Luxembourgers, Germans, Swiss and Italians. The Mayor of Sainte Marie aux Mines honoured us with a visit, and then it was the turn of Mr Jean Schuster, Mayor of Orbey and General Councillor for Lapoutroie, to chat with the organisers and participants. Thanks again to the Conseil G\u00e9n\u00e9ral du Haut-Rhin for its support and sportsmanship!<\/p>\n

The traditional presidential address was given at the stroke of midday, in the presence of Francis Degeix, Federal Treasurer, Jean-Claude Gailer and Claude Bosselier, Presidents of the Haut-Rhin and Vosges Codeps, members of the Cent Cols Bureau, the CERP and numerous Territorial and National Delegates. Tribute was paid to Thierry Adam and Ludger Vorberg, without whom this event would not have been what it was.<\/p>\n

The President then proceeded to induct as members of the Club des Cent Cols Ralf and Amrei B\u00c4R (Germany), Jean ROBIJNS and Gilles BRAECKMAN (Belgium), Fernand FRANTZEN (Luxembourg), Jean-Paul COURTZ (France) and Cecilia TORELLI (Italy), before asking the Territorial Delegates to hand out diplomas for the passage:
\n- of the 500th pass to Dany DEHANDSCHUTTERR, Philippe CHAZOTTIER, Ars\u00e8ne BICKEL and Alf\u00e9o LOTTO
\n- of the 1000th pass to Bernard PORTA, Dominique DESIR and Claudia SOMMER BRENNER
\n- and the 2000th pass to Jean-Paul FOUCHARD, Jean-Jacques LAFFITTE and Karl BRENNER.<\/p>\n

At the end of the afternoon, a closing drink was held at the Centre de Mittelwihr, where many of the participants gathered in a warm atmosphere to reminisce about their stay in Alsace and the Black Forest. Once again, the Cent Cols proved that they know how to turn this annual event into a mountain pass festival, despite the vagaries of the weather.<\/p>\n

A date was set for 15 August 2007 in the Massif Central.<\/p>\n
