{"id":81875,"date":"2016-12-20T21:14:10","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T19:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/centcols.org\/sejour-estival-a-bielle-pyrenees-atlantiques-du-13-au-20-aout-2017\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T22:26:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:26:53","slug":"stay-2017-bielle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centcols.org\/en\/sejour-2017-bielle\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer break in Bielle (Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques) from 13 to 20 August 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alain Gillodes, Chantal Sala, Patrick Schleppi and R\u00e9gis Paraz contributed to this page presenting the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/picdumidipssau.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-81876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/picdumidipssau.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/picdumidipssau-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pic du Midi d'Ossau (photo Alain Gillodes)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"content_editable\"><span class=\"global_colour_2 _caption_text_color local_font_2 _fcaption_text_font\" style=\"color: #222222; font-family: Georgia,Times New Roman,Times,serif; font-size: medium;\">The 2017 summer break is scheduled to take place in the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques, at the Arriu Mage holiday village, named after one of the streams that runs through Bielle, a small village in the Ossau valley in the Haut-B\u00e9arn region, at an altitude of 450m.<br>This trip, prepared by Alain Gillodes (cc n\u00b0722) and Chantal Sala (cc n\u00b03674), will enable you to discover two regions, B\u00e9arn and the Basque Country, with the Pyrenees National Park and the Midi de Bigorre and Ossau peaks.<br>Our meeting will be held at the Col du Porteigt (875 m), on the B\u00e9nou plateau, on Saturday 19 August.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction to the region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <strong>B\u00e9arn<\/strong> The Haut-B\u00e9arn region is made up of three main valleys: the Vall\u00e9e d'Ossau, the Vall\u00e9e d'Aspe and the Vall\u00e9e de Bar\u00e9tous, plus part of the Vall\u00e9e de l'Ouzom.<br><strong>Connecting rod<\/strong> is a village in the Haut-B\u00e9arn region of France, situated at an altitude of 450 m in the Ossau valley. It is one of the valley's eighteen villages.<br>The Ossau valley stretches geographically from north to south for around fifty kilometres from R\u00e9b\u00e9nacq (fifteen kilometres from Pau) to the Col du Pourtalet (on the Spanish border). It is made up of two cantons: the canton of Arudy, with its Pyrenean foothills, and the canton of Laruns, with its mid- to high-mountain landscapes. The Gave d'Ossau, the parent river of the Gave d'Oloron, flows through the area, which is dominated by the Pic du Midi d'Ossau at 2,884 metres. It is the most easterly of the three main valleys in the B\u00e9arn region that carve out the Pyrenees mountain range. It lies at the confluence of the Gave d'Ossau and Gave d'Aspe rivers, and is a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela (on the Arles route). Discover its churches and 12th-century cathedral, its ancestral traditions and its famous garbure (vegetable soup).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ossau Valley (18 villages)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Visit to Bielle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Aste :<\/strong> a promontory overlooking the glacial valley. A summer pasture district with the port (passage to the high mountains) and its barns...<br>The walk to the port of Aste offers a splendid panoramic view of the valley floor and the Pic. In the village, the fa\u00e7ade of the<br>In the town hall, the symbol of the valley: the bear (from which Ossau may have derived its origin) and the cow, symbol of the pastoral world.<br><strong>4. B\u00e9on :<\/strong> den of vultures. The area is a former seigneury of the Viscounty of Bearn. The altarpiece and paintings in the church are well worth seeing. Overlooking the village, the crevices of the P\u00e8ne de B\u00e9on are home to griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures (known in B\u00e9arn as Marie Blanque), which can sometimes be seen circling in the sky. The museographic area of the Vulture Cliff is dedicated to these birds of prey, once threatened with extinction and now protected.<br>5.<strong> 15 August, Laruns,<\/strong> a village in the heart of the Ossau valley, offers its traditional festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vall\u00e9e d'Aspe (13 villages)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It stretches along the Gave d'Aspe for almost 40 km, from the village of Escot to the Col du Somport (1,632 m), marking the border with Aragon in Spain.<br>Beyond Urdos, the Aspe valley opens onto the Spanish autonomous community of Aragon via the Somport, the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela. This route across the Pyrenees has seen the passage of crusaders, pilgrims, men of war, traders, herds and travellers by road or rail (until 1970).<br><strong>1 - The Lescun circus<\/strong><br><strong>2 - The Portalet fort :&nbsp; <\/strong>Built in 1842 by order of Louis-Philippe to guard the border of the Pyrenees, the Portalet fort seems to rest against a cliff overlooking the Gave d'Aspe. Along with the Chemin de la M\u00e2ture, it makes this gorge one of the most picturesque sites in the Pyrenees. Tasked with protecting the Col du Somport road from Spanish incursions, the Portalet fort (in B\u00e9arnais means \"little gate\" or \"little passage\") owes its fame to the political figures who were interned there under the Vichy regime: Blum, Daladier, Reynaud, Mandel, Gamelin... and then, after the war, P\u00e9tain.<br><strong>3 - Moulin de la vall\u00e9e in Bedous<\/strong><br><strong>4 - Aspe Valley Ecomuseum<\/strong><br><strong>5 - Ossineri farm in Borce<\/strong> Ossau Iraty PDO cheese<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bar\u00e9tous Valley (6 villages)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Pierre-Saint-Martin site:<\/strong> The Pierre Saint-Martin massif is also one of the world's leading caving sites. It is a 140km\u00b2 karst area at an altitude of between 1,500 and 2,100 metres, straddling the border between France and Spain.
