The source of the eponymous torrent is nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geographical location<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Massifs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The pass lies on the boundary between the Alpine massifs of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grandes_Rousses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Grandes Rousses<\/a> (to the south), the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massif_des_Arves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Arves<\/a> (to the east) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cha%C3%AEne_de_Belledonne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Belledonne mountain range<\/a> (further west).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Col du Glandon and the Col de la Croix de Fer are geographically very close, less than 3 km apart.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"987\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82512\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-photo.jpg 987w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-photo-768x322.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 987px) 100vw, 987px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Col de la Croix-de-Fer is geologically part of the massif of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grandes_Rousses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Grandes Rousses<\/a>. This is part of the vast crystalline region that includes the Mercantour, Les \u00c9crins, Oisans, Belledonne and Mont-Blanc massifs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The rocks that make up the pass are volcanic tuffs from a volcanic outpouring dating from the Carboniferous period (around 300 million years ago), the result of the collision of tectonic plates during the uprising of the Alps. It is also possible to observe \"roche moutonn\u00e9es\" or \"whaleback rocks\". These are outcropping rocks that bear the scars of a glacier rubbing against their surface, striating and polishing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Readers interested in this subject should refer to the comprehensive article by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geol-alp.com\/h_maurienne\/_lieux_maurienne_Sud\/Ouillon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">geol-alp.com<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hydrography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>West side (Is\u00e8re side)<\/strong>&nbsp;Eau d'Olle valley. <br>L'eau d'Olle is a tributary of the Romanche, which rises near the Col de la Croix de Fer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>East and north-facing slopes (Savoie side) : <\/strong>the Arvan valley.<br>It is also known as the Vall\u00e9e des Arves. <br>The Arvan is a tributary of the Arc at Saint Jean de Maurienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Both slopes are part of the <strong>Is\u00e8re basin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Is\u00e8re side<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Access is shared with the Col du Glandon as far as the D926 \/ D927 junction (alt. 1907 m), 200 m from the Col du Glandon and 2.7 km from the Col de la Croix de Fer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The D526 leaves Rochetaill\u00e9e (32.5 km away, alt. 711 m), crosses Allemond (30 km away), passes over the Verneys dam and runs alongside the lake (left bank), crosses the Rivier d'Allemond (18 km away - alt. 1264 m), near the Grand'Maison dam (9 km away - alt. 1720 m) then runs alongside the lake on the right bank. It becomes the D926 as it crosses the Rieu Claret (4 km away, on the Is\u00e8re \/ Savoie border, alt. 1773 m) before joining the junction with the D927 towards the Col de la Croix de Fer.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"964\" height=\"822\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-carte.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82515\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-carte.jpg 964w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-carte-768x655.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Savoie side<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">From <strong>Saint Jean de Maurienne<\/strong> (29 km away - alt. 570 m), <strong>via the D926&nbsp;<\/strong>Pont de Belleville (14km away - alt. 1228m), Saint Sorlin d'Arves (10km away - 1400m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Three tunnels (96, 178 and 503 m - well lit) located between 17.5 and 16 km from the summit of the co<\/em>l.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Via the Glandon pass<\/strong>the <strong>D927<\/strong> gives access to the Col du Glandon (<a href=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/en\/util\/geo\/visu.php\/?code=FR-73-1924\">FR-73-1924<\/a>) from the Maurienne (Saint-Etienne de Cuines 21 km away - alt. 450 m) via Saint-Colomban-des-Villards (10 km from the pass - alt. 1100 m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">From the Col du Glandon, take the short descent (200m) to the junction (alt. 1907m) with the D926 from Allemont and the Lac de Grand'Maison. The Col de la Croix de Fer is then 2.7 km away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modification of access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Is\u00e8re side<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The road was first built to the Col du Glandon in 1898. The extension to the Col de la Croix de Fer was inaugurated on 14 July 1912.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the XX<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century two changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The route was changed with the construction of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barrage_de_Grand%27Maison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grand-Maison dam<\/a>&nbsp;from 1978 to 1985. The road slightly overhangs the lake (around fifty metres) before descending slightly towards the Eau d'Olle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On 23 April 1989, a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irma-grenoble.com\/04risques_isere\/00commune_evenements_fiche.php?id_evenements=771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Landslide from Pic Bunard&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;(300 to 400 m<sup>3<\/sup>&nbsp;of rocks) swept away the road (right bank of the Eau d'Olle) above the Rivier d'Allemond at the Maupas waterfall. The road was rebuilt on the left bank over 2 km, with a descent (62 m in 600 m) to cross the torrent and then a fairly steep ascent (11% for the first kilometre). The old road can still be seen along the right bank of the mountain.&nbsp;<em>(It was a year with Marmotte and BRA.  A new road was built in 2 months! During periods of high consumption, the power station turbines water from the upper reservoir. The water then flows into the downstream reservoir. During off-peak periods, mainly at night and weekends, water from the lower reservoir is pumped to the upper reservoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In this way, the system can store energy and respond quickly to peak demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The most powerful dam in Europe, it produces the equivalent of 2 old-generation nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-Gd-Maison.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82517\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-Gd-Maison.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Glandon-Gd-Maison-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Le <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.fr\/groupe-edf\/agir-en-entreprise-responsable\/fondation-et-mecenat-patrimoine-sport\/site-emblematique-grandmaison-hydrelec\/hydrelec-un-musee-dedie-a-lhydroelectricite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">EDF Hydr\u00e9lec Museum<\/a><\/strong> between the road and the Lac du Verney has been awarded the&nbsp;<em>Museum of France<\/em>&nbsp;and presents unique collections from the Alpine Arc dating from the 19th century to the present day.<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;century and xx<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;century. A scenographic tour pays tribute to the scientists, engineers, technicians and labourers involved in the creation of hydroelectric power stations and dams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Savoie side<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:21% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"308\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Statue2-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83290 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Statue2-11.jpg 308w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Statue2-11-6x12.jpg 6w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Visit <strong>carrefour d'Entraigues<\/strong>12.5 km from the pass, you can admire the wooden sculpture of the guide Guille, a native of Entraigues and a pioneer in the conquest of the Aiguilles d'Arves and the \u00c9tendard).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>Saint Sorlin d'Arves<\/strong>&nbsp;: l<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89glise_Saint-Saturnin_de_Saint-Sorlin-d%27Arves\">'<strong>Saint-Saturnin Church<\/strong><\/a><strong> (<\/strong>built in 1603)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">At the pass<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Two orientation tables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One to the east of the pass, facing the Arvan valley and the Aiguilles d'Arves mountains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The other to the west, looking towards the upper reaches of the Eau d'Olle, the Col du Glandon and the Belledonne mountain range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Above the collar<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintsorlindarves.com\/incontournables-pour-les-familles\/circuit-des-trois-lacs-vers-le-pied-du-glacier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Three Lakes Circuit<\/a> to the \u00c9tendard refuge, Lac Bramant and Lac Blanc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Administrative status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Currently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Both sides of the pass are in the Savoie department (Commune de <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-Sorlin-d%27Arves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-Sorlin-d%27Arves\">Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Is\u00e8re \/ Savoie boundary is located on the Is\u00e8re side at the Pont du Rieu Claret (1730 m), 6.3 km from the pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Why isn't the Is\u00e8re \/ Savoie boundary on the Arc \/ Is\u00e8re LPE?&nbsp;<em>(i.e. the Croix de Fer and Glandon passes)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oisans.com\/decouvrir\/les-incontournables\/col-glandon-col-de-croix-de-fer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">\"oisans.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Until 1860, the Sabot pass marked the border between France and Savoie. Vaujany, on the route des cols, was then equipped with a&nbsp;<strong>border office<\/strong>&nbsp;to protect the province of Dauphin\u00e9. ... \/ ... Where the Grand'Maison reservoir now extends,&nbsp;<strong>in the past, vast alpine pastures were shared between the French and Savoyards<\/strong>. The Grand'Maison was a large building used to house shepherds. It was the finish of the 7<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;stage of the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 2023 won by Jonas Vingegaard, who thus secured his victory in this edition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is the highest finish in the history of the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BRA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclotourisme-grenoble-ctg.org\/bra\/un-peu-dhistoire-et-de-geographie-au-sujet-des-cols-du-bra-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The ARO<\/a> has been using the Col de la Croix de Fer since its creation in 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the Savoie side from 1936 to 1945<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternating between Is\u00e8re and Savoie after 1945<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the Is\u00e8re side since 2015<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marmot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">From its inception in 1982 to 1999, the \"La Marmotte\" cyclosportive race was run over the Col de La Croix de Fer, before moving on to the Col du Glandon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 2023, the Glandon was no longer on the programme, and the route took in the Col de la Croix de Fer (and the Col du Mollard).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There are many profiles of the Col de la Croix de Fer on the internet.
