Pierre H\u00e9rant has completed the longest possible cycle tour of France, following the country's administrative and land borders exactly.
In this copious pocket-format book, which reads like a novel, he gives a thrilling account of his 84-day, 7,600km, 80,000-metre positive ascent cycling adventure over the major cols of the Tour de France in the Alps and Pyrenees.
Pierre H\u00e9rant doesn't just ride, he tells. His story plunges the reader into the raw, poetic reality of a long-distance trek, with its breathtaking panoramas, improvised bivouacs, capricious weather, minor problems, fatigue and wonder.
From the heroic days of the Tour de France to the D-Day landing beaches, with their exploits and tragedies, from the memory of Brel on the border of the flat country to the rugged coastline of the Basque coast, from the monotonous roads of the Landes to the brutal mountain passes of the Pyrenees, the author subtly weaves a tale combining sublime landscapes, collective memory, memorable encounters and environmental issues.
