Het is de laagste pas tussen Frankrijk en Itali\u00eb. De Franse kant is met muilezels begaanbaar, in tegenstelling tot de Italiaanse kant, waar alleen de laatste 600 meter onverhard zijn. <br>De route begint vlak bij de ingang van de verkeerstunnel en slingert zich over een afstand van ongeveer 7,5 km op spectaculaire wijze door 46 haarspeldbochten boven het bovenste deel van de Roya-vallei. De eerste vermelding van een onderhouden weg tussen Ventimiglia en Borgo San Dalmazzo dateert uit 1178! Gedurende de hele middeleeuwen trokken er karavanen over de pas die zout leverden in de Povlakte. De Roya-vallei werd overigens rijk dankzij deze lucratieve handel, die rijkelijk werd afgeperst door de heren van Tende\u2026 Jaarlijks passeerden 16.000 muilezels de pas!<br><br>De pas heeft veel indringers zien passeren, waarvan Karel V in 1536 de beroemdste was, maar reizigers hebben ook een lastige route genomen, geholpen door een heel gilde van \u00abpassanten\u00bb, hier bekend als \u00abcollants\u00bb of \u00abcoulants\u00bb (van de pas...). Dragers konden worden ingehuurd om om de beurt de pas over te steken in vijf uur voor een klein fortuin. Al in de 16e eeuw werd er een tunnelproject gelanceerd en werd er zelfs begonnen met de werkzaamheden (de ingang van deze oude tunnel is te zien aan de Italiaanse kant op ongeveer 1750 meter hoogte). Maar door geldgebrek kwam er niets van de grond. Pas in 1780 financierde koning Victor Emmanuel III (Piemonte-Sardini\u00eb) het werk aan het huidige traject, dat na vier jaar inspanning werd aangelegd. Net voor de helft van de beklimming werd een wachthuisje opgericht met 30 mannen. Hun taak was om de veiligheid van de route te garanderen en hulp te bieden aan de reizigers, vooral in de winter. Dit wachthuisje bestaat vandaag de dag nog steeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/col_de_tende_3-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/col_de_tende_3-6.jpg 549w, https:\/\/centcols.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/col_de_tende_3-6-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Het wachthuisje zoals het er in de 18e eeuw uitzag. Het spoor dat vandaag nog steeds wordt gebruikt, werd geopend dankzij werkzaamheden die tussen 1780 en 1784 werden uitgevoerd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De weg diende niet alleen voor handelsdoeleinden: in 1794 staken de revolutionaire troepen de pas over en vielen het koninkrijk Pi\u00ebmont-Sardini\u00eb binnen, terwijl op 25 april 1945 de eerste divisie van de FFL de pas overstak na de Roya van de laatste Duitse bezetters te hebben bevrijd.
