De Col Agnel vormt de verbinding tussen het regionale park van Queyras in de Hautes-Alpes en de Val Varaita in het Italiaanse Piemonte. Het is precies aan deze kant van Piemonte dat een van de zwaarste beklimmingen in de Alpen plaatsvindt, in de categorie van grote passen boven de 2000m. Deze weinig bekende reus, die culmineert op een hoogte van 2744 m, is slechts een paar meter hoger dan de Col de l'Iseran (2764 m), de Col du Stelvio (2757 m) en de top van de Bonette (2802 m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maar het zijn niet zozeer de hoogteverschillen die indruk maken, vooral in de laatste negen kilometer na de brug over de Varaita-stroom, waar de fietser wordt geconfronteerd met een formidabele muur met een gemiddeld stijgingspercentage van 10%, maar waar het stijgingspercentage vaak schommelt tussen 11 en 12%. Het moedigste deel komt bij kilometer 17,5 na een haarspeldbocht naar rechts, waar een klim van 300 meter aan meer dan 14% je over de ruggengraat van de Costa Ciais brengt, de uitlopers van de Pic d'Asti, duidelijk zichtbaar in het noordoosten, terwijl de weg in lange, rechte stukken door de vallei van de Agnel klimt. Daarna volgt een reeks van acht haarspeldbochten, onderbroken door een kort vlak gedeelte (3% gedurende 300 m) na de twintigste kilometer. Dit is de enige plek om even op adem te komen voordat we 3,3 zeer lastige kilometers van 11 tot 12% afleggen! De laatste driehonderd meter voor de pas worden afgelegd tegen slechts 6,6%. Merk op dat deze negen kilometer lange muur op een hoogte tussen 1.840 m en 2.744 m ligt, wat de inspanning die nodig is om vooruitgang te boeken nog vergroot...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Col Agnel begint in Torette, op 1143m hoogte, want vanuit dit gehucht begint de echte klim. Tot aan Chianale zorgt het variabele stijgingspercentage, met een paar steile stukken vari\u00ebrend van 9 tot 11%, voor een goede warming-up voordat je het laatste deel aanpakt. Het landschap op dit eerste stuk is ontspannend en zeer aangenaam terwijl je langs de oever van het Castellomeer rijdt. Na de oude douanepost wordt het landschap steeds mineraler naarmate je de pas nadert, in het noordoosten gedomineerd door de Pain de Sucre (3208 m) en de Pic d'Asti (3220 m), terwijl op de achtergrond in het oosten de Mont Viso lijkt te heersen vanaf de top van zijn 3841 m!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit grandioze landschap is een mooie beloning, als bekroning van een inspanning van 1 uur 38 minuten (de tijd die de auteur nodig had bij de start vanuit Torette).<\/p>\n\n\n
