FR-2B In the heart of the Agriates Desert – Gravel 35 km, 710 m elevation gain, 8 passes
Author description
Author Bernard Giraudeau
Course : carried out in 2012
Departure : car park near the Ostriconi estate on the T30 (between Ogliastro and Cannuta Lake). Altitude: 9 m.
Tourist information
The Agriates Desert, a potato-shaped protrusion along Corsica’s north-western coastline, was once fertile farmland («Agriate» derives from ‘agraire’). The scarcity of water has prevented permanent human settlement. The 15,000-hectare area stretching between Saint-Florent and the Ostriconi Valley is a place of great beauty, both along the coastline and within the heart of the mountain range.
Particularly worth seeing are the old sheepfolds at Terrice at km 29.1 on the left and «l’oriu» at km 34.2 on the right.
Technical specifications
This route comprises 12 km of road and 22 km of track. Only the climb up to Bocca di Petraiolu presents a short stretch of difficulty. In certain seasons, the spillway at Cannuta Pond may make the final 500 metres impassable. Please check this before setting off!
