Charter of the Cent Cols Club discussion list

This charter describes the conditions of use of the Club des Cent Cols discussion list.

Subjects

All topics concerning our club's activities or related to cycle touring in general and mountain cycle touring in particular may be discussed on this discussion list. However, any topic of a political or religious nature in particular, or which may lead to controversy in general, is strictly prohibited.

It is entirely possible to deviate, occasionally and sparingly, from this sporting theme by proposing topics related to general knowledge, for example. Good humour and wit are not only permitted but encouraged, while respecting an ethic based on generally accepted good taste.

Social behaviour

To ensure that this list remains appealing, user-friendly and interesting for all its subscribers, it is important to follow a number of basic and obvious rules. Politeness is mandatory in all circumstances (e.g. writing «hello» at the beginning of an email). A courteous tone is pleasant and therefore recommended. Conversely, an unpleasant, aggressive or abusive attitude is to be avoided.

Let us not be afraid to broach any subject of our choice within the authorised framework, even if it has probably already been discussed previously. The response will always be patient and friendly. Tolerance in all matters is strongly encouraged.

Note

To avoid seeing messages sent by «First Name Last Name», you need to edit your profile:

  • go to https://groups.io;
  • click on «Log in» in the top right-hand corner;
  • enter your email address in Email Address and click on «Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?;
  • a link will be sent to your mailbox. Click on this link and you will be taken to your profile home page;
  • click on «Identity» on the left;
  • You can edit your general profile (top frame) and your Hundred Passes profile by clicking on the corresponding «Edit» button;
  • It's the Cent Cols profile we're interested in: here you can change your Display Name. This is the name that will appear as the sender when you send a message to the list;
  • Don't forget to click on «Update Group Profile» at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

Then simply send your messages to :
cent-cols@groups.io

Practical aspects

Subject of the message: make sure the title is explicit and short. Remember to change the subject of the message if our response differs significantly from the original subject.

Let us avoid accumulating quoted messages and retain only those that are of genuine interest to the continuation of the conversation.

Photos, documents and attachments placed directly in a message are not permitted. However, a link to a montage of photos or to an interesting website directly related to our business is welcome.

Interest in the subject

Keep in mind that not all topics will necessarily be of interest to all subscribers. If emails on a particular topic do not interest you, it is far better to delete them from your inbox than to complain.

On the other hand, it is also important not to overload the list with numerous, redundant emails that no longer provide any new information. You can also suggest to your contacts that they continue the discussion in progress in a private group of people interested in the subject, before sharing your conclusions on the list.

Language

Everyone is free to use the language of their choice, but the message will not be readable by the majority if it does not also include a version in English, the language most commonly used by subscribers. Translating an interesting email from English into another language will demonstrate our interest in our non-English-speaking friends.

Moderation

Given the limited range of topics that can be discussed and the appropriate behaviour to adopt, there are no plans for managers to moderate discussions in advance. It is possible that someone may inadvertently deviate from this charter. The author may then apologise on the list as soon as they become aware of it. If the deviation is noticed by a third party, they are strongly advised to politely ask the author for an explanation, as it may be an error and not a deliberate act. While errors are possible and excusable, harmful and deliberate actions are not.

Managers will sometimes have to intervene during a discussion to maintain calm on this list and avoid the risk of «overheating». The lessons of the past prepare us for the future! The next step will be to contact the offending subscriber «personally», informing them of the discrepancy and asking them not to repeat it. In the event of a repeat offence, the subscriber may be excluded from the list for a period to be determined according to the seriousness of the offence and the judgement of the managers and the Board of Directors of the Club des Cent Cols.

The members of the Club des Cent Cols are scattered across many different regions and countries, and most of them don't know each other. This list is often the only means of contact between us. It is, therefore, a powerful link that binds us together. It is therefore extremely important to preserve it, bearing in mind that each of our emails, depending on its content, will strengthen or corrode it.
