General Meeting of the Club des Cent Cols in Parent (Puy-de-Dôme) on 27 and 28 November 2010

The Amicale Cyclo Clermontoise invites you to the 2010 General Meeting of the Club des Cent Cols in Parent, in the Val d'Allier. Accommodation and catering will be provided by the Village de Vacances de Parent, a long-standing partner of the FFCT, which has moved from VAL to VVF.

Europe's last great wild river, from its Cévennes source in the Lozère to its confluence with the Loire at the Bec d'Allier in the Nivernais region, the Allier forms the backbone of the Auvergne.

Its valley separates the Devès plateau from the Margeride mountains, the Puys range from the Livradois mountains and the Combrailles from the Madeleine mountains. Its course waters the limagnes of Brioude, Issoire and Riom, symbolised by the three languages on the traditional coat of arms of the Province of Auvergne.

Programme

The reception will be open from Friday evening for those who have travelled a long way to get their bikes out on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon will be devoted to the meeting itself, followed by a festive meal.

Sunday morning's programme includes a road bike outing, a mountain bike outing or a guided walk with a visit to a winery, before the closing lunch at midday.

The routes

The routes will be spread along both banks of the Allier. The road circuits will be around 60 km long, while the mountain bike circuits will be suitable for a half-day ride.

  • Right bank: the castles circuit: Yronde-et-Buron, Saint-Babel, Chauriat, Mezel, Busséol, passing through the garlic capital, the medieval town of Billom and Vic-le-Comte, former capital of the Counts of Auvergne. There are three passes on this route: the Croix des Gardes, Potey and Jallat passes.
  • Left bank: the oppida trail: three climbs to discover three high-altitude sites where archaeological digs have uncovered a Gallic oppidum: Corent, Gondole, and the best-known Gergovie, the highest point on the route at 717 m, on whose slopes is the only pass on the route: the Col des Goules (FR-63-698). On the way back, the route passes through the wine-growing villages of Veyre-Monton, La Sauvetat, Authezat and the village of Montpeyroux, characterised by its tower and arkose buildings.
  • Sunday morning guided walk: plan to carpool to the village of Boudes in the Lembronnais. A 2-hour walk (bring walking shoes) will enable you to discover the «Colorado auvergnat»: the Vallée des Saints, made up of fairy chimneys sculpted in red lateritic clay. On the way back, visit a winery in Boudes.

Tours

On Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November, two road and mountain bike circuits are on offer, numbered R1, R2, V1 and V2. All routes start from the Parent VVF and run in an anti-clockwise direction.
