La Planche des Belles Filles
According to a legend based on popular etymology, the place owes its name to an episode during the Ten Years' War in 1635, when young girls from the neighbouring village took refuge on this mountain to escape the cruel Swedish mercenaries stationed in the Plancher-les-Mines area.
The département of Haute-Saône lies to the south of the Vosges mountains. It takes its name from the river Saône, which flows through it from north to south. It is a large river, 473 km long, and the third longest in France.
Plancher-les-Mines is located in the upper Rahin valley and, as its name suggests, the town has played a part in its long industrial and mining history, now in sharp decline, marking the valleys of this region. Today, Plancher-les-Mines has risen from the ashes thanks to the presence of the Planche des Belles Filles, a mecca for international cycling and in particular the Tour de France.
Participants in the regional event were divided between a road course and a mountain bike course to reach some of the Haut-Saône passes and the Planche des Belles Filles.
