Introduction to the region
Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Vaison-la-Romaine is best known for the archaeological heritage from which it takes its name.
Vaison-la-Romaine, listed as one of the world's "great citiesThe Most Beautiful Detours in France"is steeped in a rich history dating back to antiquity. A testament to its glorious past, the town is home to the largest archaeological park in France, with its two ancient sites : Puymin and Villasse. An immersion into the heart of the two sites, both carefully preserved, offers a fascinating insight into Roman life. At the heart of the Puymin site is the ancient theatre, a remarkable architectural treasure, and the Théo Desplans museum, where statues and everyday objects bear witness to 2,000 years of history...
Le Roman bridge with its majestic arches, spans the Ouvèze riverThis is a great way to step back in time from Roman times to the Middle Ages, with Mont Ventoux as a backdrop.
Classified as 'Little City of CharacterThe medieval city invites you to stroll through its cobbled streets, where the Place du Marché and its babbling fountain create an enchanting atmosphere. The château comtal, the highest point in the town, stands serenely on its rocky outcrop, watching over the town. Boutiques and art galleries will enhance your discovery of the heart of the Haute Ville.
Vaison-la-Romaine is unique in having two cathedral churches : l'Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral church located in the heart of the city, with its sumptuous stained-glass windows designed by Kim En-joong, and the che Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-NazarethSituated at the foot of the ancient site of La Villasse, with its magnificent cloister, you can enjoy moments of peace and contemplation in the face of such historic beauty.
