FR-34 Olargues – Route: 105 km, elevation gain: 1,990 m, 17 mountain passes

Author description

Author : René Mercier
Course Completed in May 2025
Departure : Olargues, with a large car park in the centre of the village, on the square where the old railway station used to be.

Tourist information

A varied route that follows the Orb gorges, passes through woods and gets a little tougher in the forests around Pardailhan. After Riols, you can take the greenway on the way back, before reaching the hilltop village of Olargues and its beautiful Romanesque bridge over the River Jaur.

Technical specifications

The route consists of 96 % on roads and 99 % on cycle paths. The route begins with 4 km along the Passa Païs greenway, then the first pass (des Parties) is difficult to navigate for the final 300 m: the path is extremely rough and steep, so you’ll need to dismount on both the outward and return journeys.
Grades of 8 % on the approach to Pardailhan towards the Col de la Louvière, and also on the Col du Bouissou.
Water point at Riols at the foot of the Col du Bouissou. Food, bakery in Saint-Chinian.
If you want to stay under 100km, simply don't climb the last pass (Col du Bouis) at the entrance to Olargues, or the more difficult penultimate pass (Col du Bouissou).
