Marcel Durand CC 3343

Over the All Saints’ Day weekend, it was with great sadness that I learnt of the death of Marcel Durand.
He joined the club in 1991 as member number 3343.
As I lived next door to him, I got to know him in the late 1980s at tarot competitions.
A keen cycle tourist, he joined the FFCT in 1980. In 1992, he founded the Amicale Cyclo des Hautes-Vosges and opened the first cycle shop in the Vosges department.
For many years, he was a member of the Vosges Departmental Cycle Tourism Committee, where he was in charge of the youth committee.
I got my first FFCT licence as soon as his club was set up. He introduced me to France by taking part in various cycle tours, particularly the BCMF one-day rides.
During my first few years of my undergraduate degree, he introduced me to the Club des Cent Cols.
Together with his wife Marcelle, he took part in numerous club trips, including those marking the club’s half-century.
During the 2019 summer camp in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, he helped me find partners. Each participant was given a personalised box of sweets.
Those who completed the V6 route will remember the refreshment stop at the Haut-Jacques col, run by his wife and granddaughter.
He leaves a huge void.

We have learnt of the death of Marcel Durand, who was born on 10 May 1948 in Saint-Léonard. He had a sister and a brother.
After successfully completing his Scolarité and obtaining his school leaving certificate, he went on to gain a CAP in automotive mechanics at the vocational college in Gérardmer. He then completed 16 months of military service in the engineering corps in Vieux-Brisach.
In 1969, he married Marcelle Baret. They had three children: Christophe, Sandrine and Stéphane. The family later grew to include three grandchildren and one great-grandson. In 1972, the family moved to Bruyères, and then to Fays, after their house had been built. Marcel Durand had enjoyed a successful career as a regional lorry driver, and later as a bus driver.
A keen cycle tourist since 1980, he founded the Fays Cycle Touring Club and the ecole. His cycle tour of France, completed in 21 stages in 2012, remains a fond memory.
He was also a member of the Bruyères Pétanque Club and enjoyed playing belote and tarot. He was also a volunteer driver for Solidarité Transports.
Our condolences.

    Harsh and sad news!
I first met Marcel (and Marcelle) a long time ago, back when I was chairman of the Dieuzois Cycling Club.
We used to take part in his walk in Bruyères on a regular basis, and his club would often visit Dieuze.
We had a lot in common and always enjoyed getting together for major events such as the Semaine fédérale de Verdun, the Lorraine League’s Tour de Corse or CCC trips.
A leading figure in cycling tourism in Lorraine has left us, along with his strong spirit and character.
My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Marcelle, and his family.

I remember very clearly that generous supply of food, so kindly provided during our stay in the Vosges.

Time, relentless as ever, is taking its toll on our ranks.
Many memories of my encounters with Marcel come flooding back to me – from the Cent Cols trips in the Vosges, but not only those, as Marcel was always keen to explore other mountain ranges as well. With his boisterous manner and passionate tone, Marcel was unrivalled in his ability to bring back memories of hikes all over France.
We offer our deepest condolences to his family and extend our sympathies in particular to his wife, Marcelle.
