Tourist information

In the Aude Pyrenees, the Sault region consists of a high plateau situated at an altitude of over 1,000 metres and offers magnificent panoramic views of the Ariège Pyrenees. Numerous caves containing traces of prehistoric occupation, some of which are adorned with cave paintings, are scattered throughout this area (not open to visitors). In the village of Belvis, there is the La Cauna cave a museum in the village is dedicated to it, where objects found during the excavations are on display.
Some of the village walls are decorated with frescoes that reproduce the parietal inscriptions found in certain caves in the department, as well as those from Bernard Romain, a painter who created a giant mural at the entrance to the village in 2023: an allegorical historical mural depicting the history of Catharism in Occitania.

Technical specifications

With a cycleability rating of 95 %, this lovely route winds its way across and around the Sault plateau, with numerous sections through woodland.
