FR-34 Nissan-lez-Enserune - Route 105 km, D+ 870 m, 7 passes

Tourist information

This route straddles the Hérault and Aude departments. It is ideal for those wishing to do the brevet de l'Hérault, as it takes in isolated passes on the edge of the south-west of the département. First, it follows the Aude, the canal at Sallèles-d'Aude and the Cesse and their barges, then crosses the more mountainous Mediterranean hinterland. It then runs alongside the Canal du Midi between Capestang and Poilhes. Numerous village churches line the route, as does the Saint-Étienne collegiate church of Capestang. At the end of the route, make a diversion of 2 km each way to the hill where the’Ensérune oppidum and the view over the dry pond at Montady.
Alternative: at Mirepeisset, make a diversion of 4 km each way to the Somail, Le Trouve Tout du Livre is a small village on the Canal du Midi, with many barges alongside and a huge bookshop that is a must-see.

Technical specifications

This route, which is 100% cycleable, is relatively flat for 45 km, with the difficulties in the middle of the route, but on the whole there are few of them.
There are two mule-track passes close to the route, both of which require a 500m push.
After Le Portel, passing through Cébazan, you can reach the Fontjun road pass FR-34-0230 by a 4.5 km round trip (this pass is already included in the FR-34 Olargues route).
Numerous water points in the villages we pass through as far as Montouliers, including toilets and washbasins next to the church in Mailhac, and next to the play area at the entrance to Aigues-Vives.
