Introduction to the region :
After our stay in Digne in 2014, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is once again the setting for this summer's Club des Cent Cols holiday, and more specifically the Ubaye valley. We'll be staying at the Cap France establishment "Lou Riouclar" on the heights of Méolans-Revel, on the right bank of the river that gives the valley its name. Rich in road and mule passes, but also rich in diverse landscapes, Ubaye should not disappoint the participants in this stay. The Ubaye valley is located at the north-eastern end of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département (04), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D'azur region. Two French départements and an Italian region mark the administrative boundaries of the valley, whose main town is Barcelonette (population 2,575). The valley owes its name to the river that flows through it from its source at the Col de Longet (FR-04-2660 /IT-CN-2660a). The river first flows south-west and then west. The Ubaye flows into the Durance at Lac de Serre-Ponçon, forming the eastern branch of the lake. The lowest point in the valley is 771m at Lac de Serre-Ponçon, and the highest peak is 3412m at the Aiguille de Chambeyron. A major road network criss-crosses the various valleys that make up this geographical entity, providing it with numerous exits almost exclusively via a pass, from the lowest, Le Collet (FR-04-0991) to the highest, the Col de la Bonnette (FR-04-2715). The Col de Larche (FR-04-1991) or Colle della Maddalena (IT-CN-1996) provides access to the Val Stura in the province of Cuneo. The main and secondary ridges offer the opportunity to climb many mule-track passes, including perhaps the most legendary of them all, the Col du Parpaillon (FR-04-2637-tunnel). The presence of numerous military tracks, which originally served the defence works, means that the mule passes can be approached at great advantage. The valley's main economic activity is tourism. There are a few alpine ski resorts in the valley, but their modest size has helped to preserve the natural and traditional character of many areas. Other sporting activities include cycling (Brevet des 7 cols de l'Ubaye) and mountain biking. Sheep farming and the sale of various local products are other sources of income. The high peaks that are everywhere along the main valley and satellite valleys, and the presence of Lac de Serre-Ponçon, offer spectacular views. Barcelonnette, the town of the "Mexicans" (Ubayans who returned after making their fortune in Mexico) and other villages have some fine monuments to visit. Thanks to its geographical location and the presence of a "low" pass, the Col de Larche (1991 m), the military history of Ubaye dates back to Antiquity. The spectacular 19th-century fortifications are the last remnants and form part of the region's tourist heritage. Ubaye is located in the southern Alps, so the climate is a Mediterranean-influenced mountain climate with exceptional sunshine, cold in winter and hot and stormy in summer. The flora and fauna are typically Alpine. The usual species can be found here (marmots, chamois, foxes, ptarmigan, ducks and golden eagles). A pack of wolves is thought to have taken up residence in the Parpaillon massif a few years ago. There is a clear contrast between the adret and ubac sides of the main east-west valley, with dark forests of fir, spruce and larch on the left bank and farmland on the right.

Other activities or visits
MEOLANS-REVEL
Various hamlets scattered at altitudes of up to 1,500 metres have preserved their character, harmoniously blending agricultural, craft and tourist activities. Méolans, visible from the road, nestles behind a rock topped by a proud bell tower, in the heart of a wooded area. The village and forest extend as far as the Laverq valley, a Benedictine priory, part of the Boscodon abbey and the stronghold of the monks who cleared the land. The village of Rioclar is the largest hamlet in the commune, with a local school and a church with stained glass windows depicting the surrounding chapels through the seasons. The Maison Chauvet, now the Auberge des Terres Blanches, has a sundial dating from 1773 with the legend "Give me the sun and I'll tell you the time". The Maison du Bois is a showcase for the timber industry, with areas for observation, information and games dedicated to the forest and timber of the Alps. The visit ends with a demonstration of woodturning, scroll sawing or router work with the Maison's animator. http://www.maisondubois.fr
HERITAGE
With a rich heritage ranging from high-altitude fortresses (from Vauban to Maginot) to villas and tombs built by former emigrants returning from Mexico, the Ubaye valley, a passageway for people and cultures, looking as much towards Italy as France, invites you to discover its inhabited landscapes. To tell the story of the adventures of its peasant peddlers and daring emigrants, and the patient development of its land, skills and knowledge, the Ubaye valley has set up five museums and organises themed tours of its forts, churches and chapels, villages and resorts, landscapes and natural treasures. A strategic military crossroads between Provence, Dauphiné and the Savoy states, the Ubaye valley was disputed for a long time. It was annexed to France in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht, and the Ubaye was extensively fortified. In the 19th century, under the successive leadership of General Haxo and then General Séré de Rivières, the main forts were built in the confluence areas or on the summits. From 1931 onwards, the Maginot line was added to these constructions. This unique and incomparable architectural heritage bears witness to the history of France in a landscape where borders no longer exist.

MUSEUMS
A museum along the valley The Lauzet-Ubaye museum reveals the landscapes of the valley and the richness of its flora and fauna, as well as the skills that man has developed in animal husbandry, crafts, architecture, hunting, gathering, etc. Located in the heart of the village in a former shop, the museum invites visitors to discover the valley. Valley Museum : Come and discover the collections of the Musée de la Vallée, which are open to the world and other cultures: popular art from Mexico, China, Burma, etc.; the orientalist paintings of Jean and Marie Caire; the cabinet of curiosities of the migrant-traveller Emile Chabrand, not forgetting the adventure across the ocean of the inhabitants of Barcelonnette (known as "les barcelonnettes") in Mexico (1805-1950), as told by a descendant.
For archaeology enthusiasts, the museum houses bronzes from the famous Ollivier collection (Gleize donation) Parc de la Sapinière - Avenue de la Libération - 04400 Barcelonnette Museoscope of the lake : It tells the story of the construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam (the largest in Europe) and the villages that sank. Through a visual and sound journey, come and discover this place that combines leisure and culture in the same scenic space. http://www.museoscope-du-lac.com
